So city-run housing is out of control. The city cannot manage their non-profit housing, or theyre running.. Help me out here, Steve, what do they run-metro housing? Its like a rooming house, only its city-run. In one place theres a window there and theres constant drug dealing going on. Weve complained for about eight years now, and the city cannot do anything about it. These are special courts, then, criminal courts operating under federal jurisdiction. Could you explain briefly how these courts work? I hope you are as outraged and disappointed as I am that there are no such courts in Montreal, a city with serious drug problems. Thank you. May I remind you that one of our colleagues, Keith Martin, tabled a bill calling for just such a distinction to be made. Therefore, thats my first question. I have two more for the other witnesses. The other thing is our community witness statements. Ive attached them to our briefing package. It gives you the flavour of what people are living with day to day. Community witness statements dont need to be taken into consideration by the judges in the same way as victim impact statements. In other words, unless youre actually the one who is assaulted, if you cant sleep every night and do your job because of yelling on the streets with people screaming for their drugs, fights, and all that kind of stuff, it does not count. The judge does not have to take it into consideration in terms of any sentencing. Then the sentencing is such that usually people are out within a few days. As a quick response to the jail question, I dont know if youre familiar with Maplehurst or not, but Maplehurst is a jail that just opened up in Inspector Pittmans area. Its a model for super jails at the provincial level. The Province of Ontario and the Halton regional police and the RCMP and the OPP are starting a pilot program. We dont know where its going to take us, but we recognize that the police are trying to get involved in the prisons. We dont know where the program is going to take us, where it will be copied or where it will be expanded to, but we also recognize that harm reduction is in the process. Χυμα Αρωμα Τύπου Joop!
